Meta has introduced real-time voice and video conversations with its animated Muse AI agent for users in the United States.

What Does Meta’s New Muse Voice Feature Offer?

Meta has rolled out Muse Voice, a feature allowing users to interact with its consumer AI agent through live voice and video conversations. The service is available to users across mobile devices, the web and Mac in the United States, offering an alternative to conventional text-based interactions with artificial intelligence.

The launch was announced on Thursday by Meta’s Chief AI Officer, Alexandr Wang, through a blog post and a post on X. The feature allows users to communicate with a responsive animated digital character that reacts during conversations. Meta intends to make interactions with its AI agent more natural by introducing visual expressions alongside spoken responses.

How Can Users Customise Their AI Avatars?

Muse Voice includes a default animated character named Jolly, which responds to conversations through facial expressions and gestures. These movements are designed to correspond with the tone of the interaction. However, the AI cannot actually see the user and instead responds according to what the person says during the conversation.

Users can also customise the avatar’s appearance, replacing the default character with a different person, animal or fictional character. During a demonstration shared on X, Wang presented a version of Muse designed as a fluffy white dog. Meta believes that allowing users to personalise their digital companions could strengthen their connection with the technology and make conversations more engaging.

What Technology Powers the Animated Conversations?

The new feature uses two AI models, Muse Realtime Avatar and Muse Realtime Voice, to support live conversations. These systems work together to synchronise the digital character’s speech, lip movements and facial expressions. Meta previously previewed the video conversation capability during its Connect developer conference in September.

The company has also introduced safeguards for AI-generated video interactions. These include an invisible watermark called Meta Video Seal, which is applied to generated video chats. Meta has restricted access to the Muse agent to users aged 18 and above. The measures accompany the company’s efforts to introduce more interactive AI capabilities while addressing concerns associated with generated digital content.

What Are Meta’s Plans for Muse Hardware?

Meta is planning to extend the Muse experience beyond existing computing devices through a wearable product called Muse Charm. The company intends to introduce the palm-sized device before the end of the year. Described as resembling a Tamagotchi, the proposed gadget will include a small screen displaying the user’s customised animated avatar.

The device is expected to allow users to interact with Muse and assign tasks without taking out their smartphones. Meta has also indicated that real-time video conversation support will eventually be introduced to its smart glasses. These planned developments would extend the availability of its animated AI agent across additional devices, although the current Muse Voice rollout is limited to users in the United States.
