A contract lineman of the electricity department was arrested by the Anti-Corruption Team while allegedly accepting a ₹6,000 bribe for removing an electricity meter and issuing an “OK report” at the Vikas Puri power house. A case has been registered against the accused under the Prevention of Corruption Act, and departmental proceedings for his immediate termination have been initiated.

Work stalled despite official receipt

Complainant Mohammad Rashid, a resident of Ahmadnagar in Lisari Gate, said he had applied for meter replacement through proper procedure and deposited the official fee of ₹50, receiving a valid receipt at the Jail Chungi office. However, even after submitting the receipt at the Vikas Puri power house, no action was taken for several days.

He alleged that approaching the Junior Engineer also did not resolve the issue and he was repeatedly asked to return later. During this period, he came into contact with contract lineman Sarfraz, who allegedly demanded ₹13,000 to remove the meter and issue the required report. The deal was later settled at ₹6,000.

Trap laid after verification

Rashid filed a complaint with the Anti-Corruption Team, which conducted preliminary verification and found the allegation to be credible. A trap was then planned. The complainant was sent to the power house with marked currency notes as per the strategy.

As soon as the accused accepted the money, the team apprehended him red-handed and recovered the bribe amount. He was taken into custody and legal proceedings were initiated.

Departmental action underway

The Superintending Engineer (City) said a detailed report has been sought from the Executive Engineer. Upon receipt of the report, termination of the contract employee and further departmental action will be carried out. Officials reiterated a zero-tolerance policy toward corruption.

Questions over grievance redressal system

The incident has raised concerns about the electricity department’s complaint-handling mechanism and supervision of contract staff. Despite payment of official charges, the work remained pending, allegedly leading to a demand for illegal gratification.

Public urged to report bribery

Anti-Corruption officials have urged consumers to immediately report any demand for bribes in government services. They assured that complainants’ identities would be kept confidential and legal trap action would be taken where necessary.

Further probe

Investigators are also examining whether the accused acted alone or if more personnel were involved in similar practices. Authorities said such actions will continue to ensure transparency and accountability in public services.
