Meerut: In a major anti-corruption operation in Meerut, an accountant posted at the District Inspector of Schools office was arrested while allegedly accepting a ₹25,000 bribe. Acting on a verified complaint, the Anti-Corruption Unit laid a trap and caught the accused red-handed inside the office premises while allegedly accepting the payment.
Complaint By Retired Teacher
The case originated from a complaint filed by Mahipal, a retired teacher and resident of Mawana. According to the complainant, DIOS office accountant Rajeev Singhal had demanded ₹25,000 to process and clear his pension-related file.

After receiving the complaint, the Anti-Corruption Unit conducted a verification, during which the allegations were found to be prima facie genuine.
Based on the findings, the team planned a trap operation. As part of the pre-arranged plan, the complainant visited the DIOS office carrying marked currency.
Caught Red-Handed
The moment he allegedly handed over ₹25,000 to Rajeev Singhal, officers of the Anti-Corruption Unit, who were present in plain clothes, intervened and arrested him on the spot.
The team seized the bribe money and collected other relevant evidence before completing the required legal formalities. After the operation, the accused was taken to the Civil Lines police station for questioning and further proceedings.
News of the arrest triggered panic inside the DIOS office, with employees and staff discussing the development across the premises.
Probe Into Other Cases
A case has been registered against the accused under relevant provisions of the Prevention of Corruption Act, and the investigation is underway.
Investigators are also examining whether the accountant had demanded or accepted bribes in other cases involving official work. If additional evidence emerges, the scope of the investigation may be expanded.
The arrest marks the second major anti-corruption operation in Meerut within the past eight days. Earlier, a police sub-inspector posted in the Ganganagar police station area was arrested while allegedly accepting a ₹50,000 bribe.
Experts say trap operations play an important role in promoting transparency and accountability in public administration. Authorities have urged citizens to report any demand for bribes by government officials so that appropriate legal action can be taken.
