The dream of medical education turned into a nightmare for a local businessman after fraudsters cheated him of ₹26.85 lakh in the name of securing his son’s admission into a medical college.

How the Fraud Unfolded

Businessman Govind Tripathi transferred the money between September 2022 and March 2023 in multiple installments into Mumbai-based bank accounts. The accused convinced him by showing what appeared to be genuine admission papers. “The accused even showed us admission letters and certificates. We had no idea it was a fraud,” Tripathi told police.

The scam surfaced when Tripathi sought confirmation directly from the concerned college, only to discover that the documents were entirely forged.

Investigators revealed that the scheme was orchestrated by Amit Dubey, a Bihar resident, who lured Tripathi through social media ads and promotional calls. Officials noted that the documents were prepared in such a professional manner that even an experienced businessman could not detect the forgery. “The forged letters looked so authentic that I trusted them for months,” Tripathi admitted.

Expert’s Warning

Cybercrime expert Prof. Triveni Singh said the case is part of a growing pattern where fraudsters exploit education pressures.

Scammers now create fake websites, admission letters, and even helpline numbers. Distinguishing real from fake is increasingly difficult,” he explained.

He added that in highly competitive fields like medicine and engineering, families under immense pressure often make hasty decisions, which criminals are quick to exploit.

Tripathi’s ordeal is not just about financial loss but also a shattered dream. “My son’s dream was to become a doctor,” he said. “Now the money is gone, and so is the dream.” The case underlines the urgent need for stronger safeguards in education admissions to protect families from such elaborate traps.
