The Kerala government has launched an investigation into a controversy surrounding the formation of a WhatsApp group purportedly for Hindu IAS officers. State Industries Minister P. Rajeeve announced the decision to examine the matter, which has stirred public debate and attracted political criticism.

The incident came to light after an IAS officer filed a complaint with the police, claiming his personal WhatsApp number was hacked and used to create a religious group. The officer reported that the group, labeled as a “Hindu IAS officers” forum, included officers from various communities. Disturbed by this unauthorized use of his account, he immediately filed a complaint and disbanded the group. The officer clarified that he had not personally added anyone to the group.

Minister Rajeeve described the incident as “serious” and noted that such actions promoting community-based divisions are concerning. He emphasized the importance of unity and adherence to the general code of conduct for IAS officers, stating that the matter falls under the jurisdiction of the Public Administration department. The government is committed to examining the situation thoroughly to determine the necessary actions.

This development sparked a reaction from the opposition, with Leader of the Opposition V.D. Satheesan calling the incident a “slur on the state.” Satheesan criticized the government, accusing it of ignoring the infiltration of religious fundamentalists into the administration. He recalled past warnings by CPI leaders about similar concerns, suggesting that the government’s alleged negligence had led to this controversy.

The Kerala government now faces mounting pressure to address the issue and prevent future incidents that could foster communal divides within the administrative framework. The investigation is expected to clarify how the group was formed and whether further steps are needed to protect the integrity of government communications and officer conduct.
