Amid the ongoing Kedarnath pilgrimage season, authorities have cracked down on an alleged fraud scheme that targeted unsuspecting devotees seeking quicker access to the revered shrine. Police have arrested a man accused of posing as an IRCTC agent and collecting money from pilgrims under the false promise of arranging VIP darshan at the Kedarnath Temple.
According to investigators, the accused, identified as Chirag, a 31-year-old resident of Mandi district in Himachal Pradesh, allegedly deceived a group of pilgrims by claiming he could secure special VIP darshan arrangements. Police said the accused, along with suspected local associates, collected ₹3,000 from each devotee, accumulating a total of ₹30,000 through the fraudulent scheme.

The alleged fraud came to light when information regarding suspicious activities at Kedarnath reached local authorities. Officials stationed at the Kedarnath Police Outpost were alerted that an individual was approaching pilgrims and collecting money while falsely presenting himself as a representative capable of arranging privileged temple access.
Acting swiftly on the information, police launched an inquiry and tracked down the suspect within the temple premises. During the operation, officers detained Chirag and recovered ₹5,000 in cash, which investigators believe was part of the money collected from the devotees. The recovery strengthened suspicions that the accused had been actively operating the alleged scheme during the ongoing pilgrimage.
During questioning, Chirag reportedly admitted to posing as an IRCTC agent and charging pilgrims for VIP darshan services that did not exist. Investigators also learned that he may not have acted alone. Preliminary findings indicate that one or more local individuals could have assisted him in carrying out the fraud. Authorities are now examining the extent of their involvement and whether a larger network was operating around the pilgrimage route.
Following the investigation, police registered a case at Sonprayag Police Station under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). After being produced before a court, the accused was remanded to judicial custody and subsequently sent to the District Jail in Chamoli.
Officials said the investigation remains ongoing and efforts are underway to identify and apprehend any additional suspects linked to the case. Authorities are also attempting to determine whether other pilgrims may have been targeted through similar methods during the current yatra season.
The incident has once again highlighted the growing challenge of fraudsters exploiting religious tourism and pilgrimage activities. Every year, thousands of devotees travel to Kedarnath seeking spiritual fulfilment, making them vulnerable to individuals who offer unauthorized services, fake accommodation bookings, fraudulent helicopter tickets, or special darshan arrangements in exchange for money.
Authorities have reiterated that pilgrims should rely only on officially authorized channels for registrations, bookings, and temple-related services. Officials warned that no individual claiming special access or privileged darshan facilities should be trusted unless the arrangement is verified through official government or temple administration platforms.
Police officials stated that maintaining the safety and security of pilgrims remains a top priority during the annual Kedarnath Yatra. Special surveillance measures, verification drives, and awareness campaigns have been intensified to prevent fraud and ensure a smooth pilgrimage experience for visitors arriving from across the country.
The case serves as a reminder for devotees to exercise caution while undertaking religious journeys, particularly when approached by individuals offering shortcuts or exclusive services in exchange for cash payments. With investigations continuing, authorities expect further developments regarding the suspected involvement of local associates and possible links to similar fraudulent activities in the region.
