Cybercriminals in Kangra, Himachal Pradesh, have devised a new method of online fraud by creating fake companies under the guise of well-known international corporations, according to officials at the Northern Range Cyber Crime Police Station in Dharamshala.

Fraudsters have been sending emails and links to unsuspecting citizens, promoting investment opportunities in these fabricated firms. Many victims, lured by the reputation of the foreign brands, have invested significant sums. Initially, the fraudulent platforms offer small returns to build credibility. However, once larger amounts are invested, payouts suddenly stop, leaving investors trapped in financial losses.

New Tactics After Old Scams Lose Effectiveness

Previously, scammers relied on tactics such as sending APK and JPG file photos, phishing links, and malicious WhatsApp messages. While those methods are still in use, the latest strategy of impersonating major foreign corporations has given the fraud a more convincing front.

Although complaints linked to this fraudulent scheme have been reported in Kangra, police said no major case has surfaced so far within the district. However, recent cases from Kullu district highlight the risks, as local residents reportedly lost lakhs of rupees after investing in such fake companies.

Authorities warn that this type of scam is designed to exploit public trust in global corporate names. Victims often believe they are investing in legitimate ventures, only to discover that the “company” exists solely as a front for cybercriminal operations.

Police Advice to Citizens: Remain Vigilant

ASP Praveen Dhiman of the Cyber Crime Police Station (Northern Range, Dharamshala) urged the public to exercise extreme caution. He stated that the scammers are creating fraudulent companies in the name of reputed foreign corporations and trapping people with promises of profits. Complaints related to such frauds are being heard, and citizens must remain alert.

Authorities have issued the following safety guidelines:

  • Do not click on unknown links, emails, or file attachments.
  • Disable auto-download settings on mobile devices.
  • Verify suspicious messages even if they appear to come from friends or relatives.
  • Raise awareness among family and community members to prevent further cases.

The police reiterated that cybercriminals are continuously evolving their strategies and urged residents to report suspicious messages, emails, or investment offers immediately. With the rise of such online fraud in Himachal Pradesh, vigilance and early reporting remain key to minimising losses.
