New Delhi: Indian Railways has officially launched the new IRCTC website, introducing a significantly upgraded online ticket booking platform aimed at improving the user experience, particularly during Tatkal ticket bookings. The redesigned platform is intended to handle heavy traffic more efficiently, speed up the booking process and provide a smoother experience for passengers.
The new website has been built on an entirely modernised technology architecture and is integrated with an upgraded Passenger Reservation System (PRS). According to Indian Railways, the platform is now capable of processing 150,000 ticket bookings and more than 4 million enquiries per minute. The previous system could efficiently handle around 32,000 bookings and approximately 400,000 enquiries per minute.
The most significant benefit of the upgrade is expected during Tatkal booking hours, when the website traditionally experiences extremely high traffic. Users have frequently reported slow response times and technical disruptions during peak periods. While the enhanced infrastructure is expected to reduce such issues considerably, Indian Railways has not guaranteed a completely interruption-free service.
Several improvements have also been made to the user interface. Seat availability for Sleeper, AC 3-Tier and AC 2-Tier classes is now displayed on a single screen, eliminating the need to switch between multiple tabs. The platform has also removed unnecessary pop-ups, advertisements and repeated CAPTCHA checks, making the booking process faster and more convenient.
The new website introduces a Fare Calendar feature, allowing passengers to compare ticket fares across different travel dates on a single screen and choose more economical options if their travel schedule is flexible. In addition, passengers can now select their preferred seat during the booking process, subject to availability, instead of relying solely on automatic seat allocation.
IRCTC has also added multilingual support, although the complete list of supported languages has not yet been announced. The booking process for concession tickets available to students, Divyangjan and patients has been simplified and integrated into the main booking workflow, eliminating several additional steps that were previously required.
The new platform represents a comprehensive technological overhaul rather than a simple visual redesign. Indian Railways believes the upgraded infrastructure will provide millions of passengers with a faster, more reliable and more stable online ticket booking experience. However, the true test of the new system will come during upcoming Tatkal booking windows and major holiday travel periods, when user traffic reaches its highest levels.
If the platform performs as expected under peak demand, it could mark a significant improvement in Indian Railways’ digital services and substantially reduce the technical issues that have long affected online train ticket bookings.
