The Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) has issued a crucial alert to train passengers, urging them to be vigilant against fraudulent booking agents. The IRCTC is now highlighting the risks of illegal bookings made using personal user IDs, which can lead to ticket cancellations and financial loss.

The Risky Reliance on Old-School Booking

While the Ministry of Railways has introduced a wide range of changes in rules and regulations to make online train ticket booking easier for passengers, a significant number of people continue to rely on the traditional method of booking tickets with the help of agents. Using an agent can simplify the process, but the IRCTC has stepped in with a strong warning, urging travelers to be cautious of agents engaging in fraudulent practices.

The core of the issue lies in agents illegally misusing personal information to book train tickets. This is often done by using a “personal ID” rather than a registered agency account, a practice which IRCTC flags as “fully illegal.” Such unlawful actions by fraudulent agents can have serious consequences for the passenger, including last-minute ticket cancellations, making it essential for travelers to verify the legitimacy of their bookings.

How to Spot an Unauthorized Agent

IRCTC has provided clear guidelines to help passengers distinguish between legitimate and fraudulent bookings. A crucial step for travelers is to verify the details printed on their train ticket.

If a ticket is booked through a registered agent, the agent’s name, address, and agency code will be clearly printed on the first page of the ticket. Conversely, if a ticket was booked using a personal user ID by an unauthorized agent, the phrase Normal User will appear at the top or in the upper part of the ticket.

IRCTC has made it explicitly clear in social media posts that it is illegal for agents to book tickets using a personal ID. Passengers are urged to check the name, address, and agency code of the authorised agent on their train ticket to confirm its validity.

Restrictions on Registered Agents

In an effort to curb fraudulent activities, registered IRCTC agents are bound by specific restrictions regarding the timing of ticket bookings. These authorized agents are not permitted to book immediate tickets, such as Opening Tatkal tickets, within the first 30 minutes of their availability. Similarly, they are restricted from booking Advance Reservation Period (ARP) tickets within the first 10 minutes of the specified time.

If an agent attempts to book tickets during these restricted periods, it serves as a strong indication of potential fraudulent activity. These limitations are in place to ensure fair access and prevent misuse of the booking system. Travelers should stay vigilant against any agent offering to book tickets during these crucial time windows.

Safeguarding Your Travel Experience

The IRCTC alert serves as a vital reminder for passengers to exercise caution when booking train tickets through any agent. Booking tickets through unregistered agents can lead to several severe issues, including financial loss in addition to ticket cancellations.

To ensure a smooth and secure journey, IRCTC advises passengers to follow key verification steps:

  1. Verify Registration: Before booking through any agent, ensure they are officially registered with IRCTC. This can be done by checking the list of registered agents available on IRCTC’s official website or mobile app.
  2. Use Official Channels: IRCTC strongly advises passengers to always book tickets through its official website or app to minimize risk
  3. Avoid Unknown Agents: Dealing with unfamiliar agents carries risks, as they might charge extra fees or, more seriously, misuse personal data for illegal bookings.

By following these simple steps and verifying agent credentials and ticket details, travelers can safeguard themselves against fraud and enjoy a secure and hassle-free travel experience.
