Indian Railways has taken a major step toward improving transparency and trust in its ticketing operations. The Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) has intensified its crackdown on fake and suspicious user accounts, permanently deactivating more than 30.3 million fake IDs so far. Additionally, around 27 million user accounts have been temporarily suspended or flagged for potential misuse.

Railway officials said the initiative has significantly curtailed the activities of touts and automated booking bots, which for years distorted the ticketing ecosystem. Previously, nearly 100,000 new user accounts were created every day; that number has now fallen to around 5,000, indicating that the system’s tight verification measures are effectively blocking fraudulent entries.

Stronger Identity Verification to Curb Fraud

A newly implemented digital verification framework on the IRCTC platform now ensures that every user booking a ticket is a verified, genuine passenger. Under the new system, passengers must confirm their identity through Aadhaar, mobile number, and email verification, which prevents bulk or automated bookings using fake credentials.

Officials say that since the rollout of this system, booking data has become significantly cleaner and the volume of suspicious activity has dropped sharply. This advanced mechanism ensures that only real, traceable users can access ticketing services — closing long-exploited loopholes in the system.

Direct Benefits for Common Passengers

Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said the reform primarily benefits ordinary travelers who previously struggled to secure tickets due to large-scale hoarding by agents and touts.

“Passengers are now experiencing clear improvements. Ticket availability has increased, and genuine users can book seats easily without intermediaries,” Vaishnaw said.

The minister has directed railway officials to further simplify and democratize the ticketing process, ensuring equal access for all users and eliminating the influence of fraudulent networks.

Crackdown on Touts and Greater Transparency

According to railway officials, certain private agents previously used multiple fake IDs to book hundreds of tickets simultaneously, reselling them at inflated prices. With the new system in place, such unauthorized mass bookings and resale practices have been largely eliminated.

This crackdown has not only reduced system congestion but also improved booking speed and enhanced public confidence in the IRCTC platform. Officials describe the reform as a landmark in India’s digital transparency drive, setting new standards in ethical governance and passenger service.

‘Local Flavour’ Service on Vande Bharat Trains

In a parallel passenger-centric initiative, Indian Railways has introduced a “Local Food” service aboard Vande Bharat Express trains. The scheme aims to connect passengers with the regional culture and cuisine of the routes they travel through.

“The idea is to let passengers experience the local taste and identity of each region,” said Minister Vaishnaw. “This will make train journeys not just comfortable but also culturally enriching.”

The program will initially be launched across select Vande Bharat routes and later expanded to other premium trains. Railways officials said that improved food quality and variety would significantly enhance overall passenger satisfaction.

A Milestone in Railway Reforms

Experts view IRCTC’s latest initiative as a milestone in digital governance and consumer protection. The combination of strict verification protocols and passenger-focused services marks a decisive move toward a cleaner, fairer, and more efficient ticketing ecosystem.

While the crackdown on fake accounts has disrupted entrenched ticketing mafias, innovations like the local cuisine initiative reflect the Railways’ focus on humanizing travel experiences and strengthening passenger trust.

With plans to extend these reforms across its entire network, Indian Railways aims to evolve into not just a transport provider, but a symbol of integrity, modernization, and customer-first service in the public sector.
