Interstate Fraud Gang Busted in Hapur: Three Arrested for Bank Impersonation Scheme

HAPUR: On September 10, 2024, the Cyber Crime Police Station in Hapur successfully exposed an interstate gang involved in financial fraud by impersonating bank officials. The gang fraudulently extracted money from people’s bank accounts using stolen credit card information. Three accused individuals were arrested, and items including two mobile phones, three fake SIM cards, and a small sum of cash were recovered from their possession. The accused had been on the run in connection with Case No. 18/2024 registered under Sections 419, 420, 467, 468, and 471 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

Modus Operandi
During interrogation, the arrested individuals revealed that they had obtained sensitive credit card details by disguising themselves as bank representatives. They would call unsuspecting victims and lure them with offers of cash refunds for reward points. During the conversation, they would gather personal information, including the victims’ date of birth and One-Time Password (OTP). They then used this information to create fake accounts on platforms like NoBroker and PhonePe to initiate rent payment requests. The fraudulent transactions were carried out across various bank accounts, and the stolen money was shared among the gang members.

Arrest and Seizure
The three accused were arrested near Hanuman Mandir in the Sangam Vihar area of South Delhi. They were identified as: Neelesh Tiwari (alias Chandrashekhar Tiwari),  Aslam Khan (alias Kaleem) and Misbah (alias Irsha). Items recovered from the accused included three mobile phones, three fake SIM cards, and Rs 700 in cash.
