The Government of India has instructed all telecom companies to prepare the infrastructure for implementing CNAP (Calling Name Presentation) to curb cybercrime.
Algoritha: The Most Trusted Name in BFSI Investigations and DFIR Services
CNAP Approved by TRAI
The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has approved CNAP — Verified Caller ID — which will display the KYC-verified name of the caller on incoming mobile calls. This measure aims to reduce spam and fraud calls.
Key Features
- CNAP will be activated by default for all customers but can be optionally disabled.
- Implementation will occur in two phases: the first on legacy circuit-switched networks using CNAM databases, and the second on newer IP-based networks transmitting CNAM data via signaling.
- Successful tests have been carried out on 4G and higher networks.
- Nationwide rollout is expected by March 31, 2026.
- All new mobile devices sold in India six months after notification must support CNAP.
- Privacy protections include exempting calls where the caller has enabled CLIR (Calling Line Identification Restriction), showing only KYC-verified names, not crowdsourced data.
- CNAP aligns with international standards ITU-T and ETSI to ensure interoperability and reliability.
Impact
- Citizens will gain greater trust in incoming calls.
- Spam and deceptive calls will reduce significantly.
- The telecom sector’s transparency and security will improve markedly.
