The Hyderabad Police Commissioner revealed that citizens in the city are collectively losing nearly ₹1 crore every day to cybercriminals through various online frauds and scams.
On Sunday, the State Director General of Police (DGP) inaugurated a cyber awareness campaign titled “Jaagrut Hyderabad – Surakshit Hyderabad” (Aware Hyderabad – Safe Hyderabad) at the Jalavayu Tower Community Hall in Kawadiguda. During the event, officials unveiled the “Cyber Simbha” logo and QR code and distributed badges to volunteers.
Cybercrime Emerging as a Social Challenge
Senior police officials noted that cybercrime is no longer just a technical issue but has become a serious social challenge. Criminals are using phone calls, social media, and online platforms to gather information about people’s wealth, location, and age — making it easier to target victims.
They highlighted that women, senior citizens, and homemakers are among the most frequent victims. Fraudsters often call when individuals are alone and use fear tactics to deceive them into transferring money. Special initiatives have been implemented this year to reduce the number of victims, and cyber patrolling has been intensified to prevent such crimes.
Police Advisory
The police have urged citizens not to trust suspicious phone calls, links, or mobile applications, and to never share OTPs, passwords, or banking details with anyone.
People have also been advised to use strong passwords and avoid sharing personal information with strangers on social media platforms.
In case of cyber fraud, victims should immediately call the helpline number 1930 and report the incident on the National Cybercrime Portal for timely action.
