Honey Singh Concert Controversy: Zomato Faces Cyber Cell Investigation Over Ticketing Issues

Mumbai: In a significant move to address concerns over ticketing irregularities, the Maharashtra Cyber Cell is set to issue a show-cause notice to Zomato. The action follows allegations that the platform sold tickets for the upcoming Yo Yo Honey Singh concert without collecting buyers’ names, violating existing regulations. The rapper’s concerts are scheduled for February 22 in Mumbai and March 14 in Pune.
Tightening the Grip on Ticketing Practices
This development comes amid heightened scrutiny over ticket sales, especially in the wake of black marketing concerns surrounding recent high-profile events like the Coldplay concert. Both Zomato and its competitor, BookMyShow, are now under pressure to comply with a new directive requiring purchasers’ names to be printed on tickets for major events.
Yashasvi Yadav, Chief of the Maharashtra Cyber Cell, highlighted the growing issue of ticket hoarding, where individuals buy large quantities of tickets for popular events and resell them at inflated prices through online platforms. The Cyber Cell has launched a detailed investigation and is directly engaging with ticketing platforms to curb this malpractice.

Stronger ID Checks for Event Entry
To combat fraudulent resales and ensure fair access, Yadav announced that all future tickets for high-demand events must clearly display the buyer’s name. Event attendees will also need to present a valid government-issued ID—such as Aadhaar, PAN card, or driver’s license—matching the name on their ticket to gain entry.
White Paper on Ticketing Reforms in the Works
In an effort to establish a transparent and legally robust ticketing system, the Maharashtra Cyber Cell plans to publish a white paper compiling industry insights. This document will explore necessary technological changes and regulatory measures to curb black marketing in the entertainment sector.
This proactive approach is part of a broader initiative aimed at safeguarding consumer rights and ensuring fair ticketing practices across Maharashtra. With the industry keenly watching Zomato’s response to the show-cause notice, the future of digital ticket sales and event access remains under close scrutiny.
