SRINAGAR:       A court in Jammu and Kashmir has denied bail to five individuals arrested in connection with a financial fraud investigation linked to officials of HDFC Bank, as authorities continue to examine allegations of large-scale financial misconduct.

Bail Denied in HDFC Bank-Linked Fraud Investigation

Authorities in Jammu and Kashmir say they have made progress in a financial fraud investigation involving officials associated with HDFC Bank, after a local court rejected bail applications filed by several individuals arrested in the case.

According to a statement issued by the Economic Offences Wing of the Crime Branch in Jammu and Kashmir, the Hon’ble Court of the Chief Judicial Magistrate in Shopian denied bail to the accused who were arrested in connection with what investigators described as a large-scale financial fraud linked to the Shopian branch of the bank.

Officials said the ruling marked a significant development in the investigation, which is being handled by the Economic Offences Wing Kashmir. The accused had sought release on bail while the investigation continued. After reviewing the case records and hearing arguments from both sides, the court rejected the request, allowing the investigation to proceed while the accused remain in custody.

Individuals Named in the Case

Authorities identified five individuals arrested during the course of the investigation. They include Adil Ayoub Ganai, Irfan Majeed Zargar, Mubashir Hussain Sheikh, Zaid Manzoor and Javaid Ahmad Bhat.

Investigators said the individuals were arrested during the ongoing probe and are currently lodged in judicial custody at Central Jail in Srinagar. The case has drawn attention in the region due to the scale of the alleged fraud and its connection to banking operations in the Shopian district.

Authorities have not publicly detailed the full mechanics of the alleged scheme but said the arrests were part of an ongoing investigation into financial irregularities linked to the bank branch.

During the bail proceedings, the prosecution argued that releasing the accused could affect the ongoing investigation. The case was argued before the court by Additional Public Prosecutor Waseem Ahmad Shah, who appeared on behalf of the Economic Offences Wing.

After hearing detailed submissions and reviewing the case records, the court rejected the bail applications in connection with FIR No. 30/2025. Officials said the decision followed examination of the materials presented during the hearing, including the progress of the investigation and the nature of the allegations. The accused will remain in judicial custody while the investigative process continues.

Charges Filed Under Multiple Criminal Provisions

Authorities said the case has been registered under several sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, including Sections 316(5), 318(4), 336(3), 340(2) and 61(2). The investigation also invokes provisions of the Information Technology Act, specifically Section 66(C), which deals with identity-related cyber offences.

The Economic Offences Wing of the Crime Branch said the investigation is continuing as authorities examine evidence related to the alleged financial fraud. In its statement, the agency said it remains committed to ensuring that the case is investigated in a manner that is fair, transparent and consistent with the requirements of the law.
