AHMEDABAD:  In a trailblazing move, Gujarat has become one of the first states in India to introduce a specialized cadre of forensic crime scene managers (FCSMs). This initiative is aimed at enhancing crime detection, ensuring efficient evidence collection, and boosting conviction rates.

Starting January 1, 2025, these forensic experts will be deployed across the state and attached to all 112 Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) and Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) level officers. Acting as a crucial link between the Gujarat Police and the Directorate of Forensic Sciences (DFS), FCSMs will play a pivotal role in modernizing crime investigation processes.

Senior police officials highlighted that recent legislative reforms in Gujarat emphasize the growing importance of forensic science in the criminal justice system. The introduction of FCSMs aligns with these reforms, reinforcing the state’s commitment to leveraging technology and expertise to deliver justice.

Key Roles of Forensic Crime Scene Managers:

  • Strategic Action Plans: FCSMs will outline procedures for crime scene management and evidence collection.
  • Collaborative Investigations: They will coordinate with police teams and forensic labs to ascertain the nature of crimes and specific investigative needs.
  • Evidence Handling: Ensuring the proper collection, preservation, and transfer of evidence will be a core responsibility.
  • Specialized Analysis: FCSMs will facilitate the analysis of critical evidence, such as DNA, explosives, and chemicals.
  • Digital Forensics: They will oversee the collection and safe handling of digital devices for expert analysis.

This forward-thinking initiative underscores Gujarat’s resolve to integrate forensic science as a cornerstone of justice delivery, setting a benchmark for other states to follow.
