Google Search Set to Evolve Into an “Agent Manager,” Says Sundar Pichai

Google CEO Sundar Pichai announced a major shift in how Google Search will function, describing its transformation from a query-based information tool into an “agent manager.” The update is designed to handle multi-step tasks across domains, signaling a new phase in AI-driven search and placing Google in direct competition with Microsoft and OpenAI.

Pichai explained that an agentic Search would coordinate multiple tasks over time instead of delivering single answers.

“A lot of what are just information-seeking queries will be agentic in Search. You’ll be completing tasks. You’ll have many threads running.”

For users, this means Search could manage tasks like comparing products, checking prices, and visiting multiple websites within a single session. For advertisers, this evolution could change how commercial intent interacts with search, potentially consolidating user actions that currently require multiple queries.

Expected Shift in 2027

Highlighting 2027 as a critical year, Pichai expects agentic processes to expand beyond engineering and developer applications. Although no specific product timelines were announced, Google has been testing features such as agentic shopping tools and the Universal Commerce Protocol. The company anticipates broader adoption of these processes in mainstream Search, aligning with long-horizon AI deployment trends.

Gemini and Search Coexistence

Addressing concerns about Gemini replacing Search, Pichai clarified the products will coexist while diverging in purpose.

“We are doing both Search and Gemini. They will overlap in certain ways. They will profoundly diverge in certain ways. I think it’s good to have both and embrace it.”

Gemini will operate as a general-purpose AI model, whereas Search will serve as a coordination layer for complex task execution. This dual-product strategy allows Google to address distinct user needs without merging the platforms.

Competitive Context

By positioning Search as an agent manager, Google enters direct competition with Microsoft and OpenAI. Microsoft’s Copilot manages multi-step tasks in Bing and Microsoft 365, while OpenAI’s Operator handles persistent browser-based tasks. Pichai emphasized Google’s advantage lies in its existing Search infrastructure, user trust, and global scale. Google’s 2026 CapEx allocation of $175–185 billion underscores its commitment to supporting this AI evolution.
