In a firm move against corruption, the police department has suspended a sub-inspector and a head constable in connection with a bribery case involving ₹30,000. The action was taken after a confidential inquiry, ordered by the Inspector General of Police of the Devipatan range, confirmed the allegations.

According to officials, the case pertains to the Motipur police station area of Bahraich district. The suspended personnel—sub-inspector Amresh Giri and head constable Shailendra Yadav, posted at Motipur police station—were accused of intimidating a victim and demanding money in a matter linked to alleged illegal mining. After the complaint was received, the matter was taken up seriously at the IG level and a probe was conducted through the anti-corruption cell.

Handcart stopped while bringing soil for wedding preparations

The complainant, Nizamuddin, a resident of Begampurwa Matehi Kala village, stated that his daughter’s wedding was scheduled and, for that reason, he was bringing soil in a handcart from Kuniyaghat on January 7, 2026, to fill a pit in front of his house. He alleged that at around 11 pm, the two policemen on duty stopped his handcart.

According to the complaint, the policemen threatened to implicate him in a mining case and send him to jail unless he paid ₹30,000. The victim alleged that, under pressure and fearing action, he borrowed money and paid the amount.

Allegations confirmed in confidential inquiry

The complaint was lodged on the anti-corruption helpline of the Devipatan range. On the IG’s directions, a confidential inquiry was conducted, which found the allegations to be prima facie true. Subsequently, a detailed investigation was carried out by the Circle Officer of Mihimpurwa, which also found the conduct of both policemen to be questionable and culpable.

Based on the inquiry reports, the IG ordered the immediate suspension of sub-inspector Amresh Giri and head constable Shailendra Yadav. Departmental proceedings have also been initiated against both.

‘Zero tolerance’ message on corruption

Senior police officials said there would be no leniency in cases of bribery and corruption at any level. Departmental sources added that if more serious facts emerge during the inquiry, further action could follow.

In the backdrop of multiple recent cases involving allegations of corruption against police personnel in the Devipatan range, this action is being seen as a strong message. Officials reiterated that strict action would continue against anyone found extorting money from the public.

Next steps after departmental inquiry

Both accused policemen will remain under suspension during the inquiry period. A final decision will be taken after the departmental proceedings are completed. If the charges are fully established, stringent disciplinary action, along with possible legal steps, may follow.

The case once again highlights how even small-scale bribery can cause serious hardship to ordinary citizens—and also underscores that complaints, when pursued, can lead to concrete action.
