At the FutureCrime Summit 2026, a panel discussion titled “Defending the Digital Backbone: AI-Powered Cybercrime, Critical Infrastructure, and Cyber Resilience” brought together cybersecurity professionals and academics to examine how artificial intelligence is changing the nature of cyber threats and challenging organizations responsible for protecting critical digital infrastructure.

The panel featured Dr. Akash Thakar, Assistant Professor, Rashtriya Raksha University; Himanshu Patel, Senior Manager – Cyber Defence, Incident Response and Forensics, Protiviti; Dr. Nishant Sawant, Director, Managed Security Services; and Er. Artificial intelligence is rapidly altering the economics and speed of cybercrime. Tasks that once required significant technical expertise can increasingly be accelerated or automated, potentially allowing attackers to conduct reconnaissance, develop convincing social-engineering campaigns and identify weaknesses across digital systems more efficiently.

At the same time, AI is becoming an important defensive capability. Security teams can use automated systems to analyse large volumes of network activity, detect unusual behaviour and prioritise potential threats that might otherwise remain buried among thousands of alerts.

The challenge for defenders is therefore not simply adopting AI, but ensuring that technological capabilities are supported by appropriate expertise, governance and response mechanisms.

Critical Infrastructure Demands Greater Resilience

The panel topic placed particular emphasis on critical infrastructure, where a successful cyberattack can have consequences extending far beyond compromised computers or stolen information. Digital technologies now underpin financial services, telecommunications, transportation, public services and other essential operations.

As these systems become increasingly interconnected, cybersecurity strategies must account for the possibility that disruption in one environment could affect several others. Prevention remains essential, but organizations must also prepare for situations in which attackers successfully penetrate their systems.

Cyber resilience consequently requires the ability to detect attacks quickly, contain affected systems, maintain essential operations and restore services while preserving evidence required for forensic investigation.

The discussion also highlighted the broader transformation of cybersecurity from a primarily technical function into an organizational and strategic responsibility.

The professional backgrounds represented on the panel reflected the different capabilities required for modern cyber defence. Dr. Akash Thakar’s academic perspective, Himanshu Patel’s work across cyber defence, incident response and forensics, and Dr. Nishant Sawant’s leadership in managed security services represented complementary dimensions of the cybersecurity ecosystem.

The central question underlying the session was increasingly urgent: as artificial intelligence makes digital systems more capable while simultaneously giving cybercriminals new opportunities, how can institutions ensure that the infrastructure societies depend upon remains trustworthy and resilient?

The answer increasingly lies not in a single security product, but in combining technology, skilled professionals, incident preparedness, forensic capabilities and institutional cooperation. In an AI-driven threat environment, defending the digital backbone will require organizations to prepare not only to prevent attacks, but also to withstand them and recover effectively when they occur.
