Patanjali Foods Ltd, one of India’s leading FMCG brands, has issued a recall for four tonnes of its red chilli powder following directives from the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI). The recall was prompted by tests revealing that the product exceeded the permissible limits for pesticide residues.

The affected batch, identified as AJD2400012, was found non-compliant with the Food Safety and Standards (Contaminants, Toxins, and Residues) Regulations, 2011. CEO Sanjeev Asthana confirmed the findings and assured that immediate steps were being taken to mitigate the issue. “We are taking this matter seriously and have initiated a complete recall while informing our distribution channels. Advertisements have also been released to alert consumers who may have purchased the batch,” Asthana said.

Consumer Refunds Initiated
Patanjali has urged consumers to return the affected products to the place of purchase for a full refund. “The value and volume of the recalled product are very small,” Asthana added, emphasizing that this was an isolated incident.

The company is now undertaking stringent quality checks and reassessing its agricultural produce supply chain. Patanjali also assured its commitment to maintaining the highest quality standards and full regulatory compliance. “We are enforcing stronger quality control measures to ensure this does not happen again,” said Asthana.

FSSAI’s Involvement
The FSSAI has been actively monitoring food safety across India, and this recall underscores the importance of its oversight. As a leading FMCG brand, Patanjali Foods’ response to the FSSAI’s findings will likely set a benchmark for other companies in the industry.

Company Performance Unaffected
Despite the setback, Patanjali Foods has reported robust growth in its financials. In the second quarter of the current fiscal year, the company posted a 21% increase in net profit, reaching Rs 308.97 crore, with total income rising to Rs 8,198.52 crore.

Broader Implications
The recall raises broader questions about food safety in India, particularly concerning pesticide use in agricultural produce. It also highlights the role of regulatory bodies like the FSSAI in ensuring consumer safety. Patanjali’s proactive steps to address the issue reflect its commitment to regaining consumer trust.
