Mumbai: The producer of Prabhas-starrer horror-comedy ‘The Raja Saab’ has filed a formal complaint with the Cyber Crime Police Station, alleging that multiple fake social media accounts were impersonating the producer’s identity to circulate misleading, defamatory and abusive content related to the film, its cast and the production team.
According to the complaint, the accounts in question falsely claimed affiliation with the film’s producer and used that assumed identity to post comments questioning the film’s quality, attacking its artistes and casting aspersions on the production process. The producer has alleged that these posts were part of a deliberate attempt to create a negative narrative around the film following its theatrical release.
Film’s Release and Online Backlash
Directed by Maruthi, The Raja Saab was released nationwide on January 9 and received a mixed response from audiences and critics. While discussions and criticism around the film intensified on social media after its release, the producer has objected to what was described as an organised effort to malign the film through impersonation and misinformation.

Allegations of Identity Misuse
In the complaint submitted to the cyber crime authorities, the producer stated that several social media handles projected themselves as being officially connected to SKN, the production banner associated with the film. These handles allegedly shared posts that went beyond routine criticism, making unverified claims and personal remarks against members of the cast and crew.
The producer has maintained that none of these accounts are official or verified, nor do they have any authorised association with the film or its makers. However, due to the impersonation, a section of social media users was misled into believing that the posts reflected internal views or admissions from the production side.
The complaint further claims that the circulation of such content had the potential to misinform audiences, harm reputations and adversely impact the film’s commercial prospects.
Cyber Crime Police Begin Probe
Taking note of the allegations, the producer lodged a written complaint on Friday at the cyber crime police station, attaching screenshots of the disputed posts, account details and other digital evidence. Sources familiar with the development said that preliminary verification has been initiated and that the authorities are examining the origin and operation of the accounts.
Officials are expected to analyse IP addresses, login patterns and digital footprints associated with the handles to establish responsibility. If the investigation establishes malicious intent, the accused could face action under provisions of the Information Technology Act and other applicable laws.
The producer has indicated that strict legal action will be pursued if it is found that the impersonation and posts were carried out deliberately to defame the film and its makers.
Warning Against Online Misinformation
In the wake of the incident, the producer has urged audiences and social media users to rely only on official and verified sources for information related to the film. Emphasising the growing misuse of social platforms, the producer cautioned that unverified posts often gain traction quickly and can cause reputational damage if shared without verification.
Industry observers note that impersonation and coordinated trolling campaigns have increasingly become a concern for film producers, especially around the time of a film’s release, when online discourse has a direct bearing on public perception.
Cast, Release and Box Office Performance
The Raja Saab features Prabhas in the lead role, alongside Sanjay Dutt, Nidhhi Agerwal, Malavika Mohanan and Riddhi Kumar. Mounted on a large scale, the film was promoted extensively ahead of its release and opened to decent initial numbers at the box office.
However, trade analysts point out that collections witnessed a slowdown in the days following the opening weekend. According to industry estimates, the film has so far grossed approximately ₹200 crore worldwide, though its sustained performance remains under watch amid ongoing online controversies and mixed word-of-mouth.
Industry Concerns and Appeal to Audiences
While criticism and debate are an inherent part of cinematic releases, experts underline that impersonation and misinformation pose a different challenge, often blurring the line between genuine audience feedback and orchestrated campaigns.
For now, all eyes are on the cyber crime investigation. The producer has reiterated that protecting the film’s credibility and the reputation of those involved remains a priority, and that every available legal remedy will be explored against those found responsible for spreading false and defamatory content.
