The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has registered a case over alleged unauthorised transfers from savings and fixed deposit accounts at Punjab National Bank’s Sector Pi branch in Greater Noida. The bank says it has identified debits totalling ₹10.24 crore across customer accounts, while a reconciliation is underway to determine the full extent of the suspected fraud.
Why Did the CBI Register a Case?
The CBI’s Anti-Corruption Bureau in Ghaziabad filed the FIR following a written complaint submitted on October 23 by the chief manager of PNB’s Noida Circle. The complaint alleged that suspicious transactions had taken place over an extended period and involved misuse of internal banking access.
Who Has Been Named?
The FIR names branch office assistant Deepanshi, account holder Ashutosh Pathak and unidentified public and private individuals. Allegations include criminal conspiracy, cheating, breach of trust and falsification of accounts.

Provisions of the Prevention of Corruption Act and Information Technology Act have also been invoked. These allegations remain under investigation, and the FIR does not establish guilt.
How Did the Fraud Surface?
PNB said the matter emerged on September 16, when an account holder questioned three debit transactions and approached the branch head. The resulting internal review uncovered other suspected unauthorised transfers affecting customers’ deposits.
According to the bank’s complaint, Deepanshi allegedly told the branch head that the transactions had been made on instructions from Pathak, whom she knew.
What Did Bank Records Reveal?
An examination of system logs, user activity and transaction histories suggested that login credentials belonging to different branch officials had been misused. The alleged irregularities involved changes to customer account details, premature closure of fixed deposit receipts, manipulation of deposit records and transfers to beneficiary accounts. Investigators will need to establish how these transactions were authorised, who controlled the credentials and where the transferred money went.
What Has PNB Said About Customer Claims?
PNB said the identified ₹10.24 crore in suspected unauthorised debits covered the preceding three years. The bank cautioned that its reconciliation exercise was continuing, meaning the amount was not a final assessment. The lender said it had settled three customer claims totalling ₹43 lakh and would honour other genuine claims following verification. Noida Police have also registered an FIR.
