The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has arrested a Peon-cum-Assistant Meter Reader of the Delhi Jal Board (DJB), posted at Zone-VI, Seelampur, along with a private individual, in a bribery case linked to the settlement of a pending household water bill.
The central agency registered the case on February 8, 2026, based on a complaint alleging that the DJB employee had demanded ₹12,000 to rectify and waive off outstanding dues on the complainant’s residential water connection.
According to the complaint, the accused official had initially accepted ₹5,500 from the complainant on February 3, 2026, as part payment and subsequently demanded the remaining ₹6,500 to complete the “settlement” process. The complainant then approached the CBI, alleging harassment and illegal demand of gratification.

After conducting preliminary verification, the agency laid a trap on February 9, 2026. During the operation, the accused Peon-cum-Assistant Meter Reader and a private person were allegedly caught red-handed while demanding and accepting the balance amount of ₹6,500 from the complainant.
Officials said the tainted bribe money was recovered during the trap proceedings. Both accused were immediately taken into custody.
Investigators are now examining whether similar demands were made from other consumers and whether the accused acted independently or as part of a broader nexus within the department. Relevant documents and communication records are also being scrutinised as part of the ongoing probe.
The CBI reiterated that it remains committed to taking strict action against corruption in public offices and encouraged citizens to report instances where government officials demand illegal gratification for performing official duties.
Further investigation in the case is underway.
