Delhi Police have arrested a 27-year-old man for allegedly creating multiple fake Instagram accounts in a woman’s name and using them to harass and defame her. The accused allegedly used the accounts to send obscene material to the woman’s husband and acquaintances and continued creating new profiles after earlier accounts were reported and removed.

Fake Instagram Accounts Used to Target Woman

The Cyber Police Station of Delhi’s North-East District registered a case after receiving a complaint from a woman residing in North-East Delhi. She alleged that an unknown person had been harassing and mentally torturing her through social media.

According to police, the accused created fake Instagram accounts using the complainant’s name and photographs. He allegedly used the accounts to send obscene material to her husband and acquaintances with the intention of defaming her and causing mental harassment.

Police said the accused also used photographs from the woman’s profile to make it appear that the fake accounts belonged to her. Whenever the accounts were reported to Meta and taken down, he allegedly created new accounts and continued the activity.

Technical Probe Leads Police to Suspect

During the investigation, the Cyber Police Station conducted a technical probe and obtained registration details of the suspected Instagram accounts from Meta. Analysis of the information indicated that the accounts were being created and operated using a mobile number registered in the name of Jeetu Kumar, police said.

Acting on the technical leads, a police team conducted raids and apprehended Jeetu Kumar, son of Dinbandhu and a resident of New Ashok Nagar, Delhi. Police also recovered one mobile phone allegedly used in the commission of the offence.

During interrogation, police said it emerged that the accused was known to the woman and had allegedly been following her since 2022.

Police Say Harassment Continued Through New Accounts

Investigators alleged that the accused repeatedly created fake Instagram IDs using the woman’s name and photographs. The accounts were allegedly used to send obscene material to people known to her.

Police said that after fake accounts were reported and removed by Meta, the accused allegedly opened fresh accounts and continued the activity, causing distress to the complainant.

Police said the accused has no previous involvement in any criminal case. Further investigation into the matter is underway.
