NEW DELHI– A businessman in South Delhi’s CR Park area has fallen victim to a cunning investment fraud, losing Rs 40 lakh (approximately $47,800 USD) after being promised an exorbitant return on his money. The victim, whose name has not been released, believed he was investing in a scheme that would double his initial capital to Rs 80 lakh, only to discover he had been handed a suitcase brimming with fake currency.
A Lure of Easy Riches
The elaborate deception began when the businessman was introduced to the perpetrators through what appeared to be a legitimate investment proposal. He was invited to a residence in CR Park, where the accused displayed large bundles of what appeared to be genuine cash inside a suitcase, seemingly to build trust and demonstrate the scheme’s supposed legitimacy. Several other individuals were also present during this convincing presentation, adding to the illusion of a reputable operation. Trusting the enticing offer, the businessman transferred the significant sum of Rs 40 lakh, eager to see his investment grow.
The Unveiling of Deceit
After transferring the money, the businessman took possession of the suitcase. However, his excitement quickly turned to shock and dismay upon opening it. Inside, he found that the bundles of cash were nothing more than expertly crafted counterfeit notes. By the time the victim realized he had been duped, the fraudsters had vanished, leaving no trace. He immediately contacted the police and filed a formal complaint, initiating an investigation into the sophisticated scam.
Landlord’s Unforeseen Entanglement
Adding another layer to the unfolding drama, the owner of the house where the fraudulent transaction took place has also approached the authorities. He reported that he had rented the property to two men just a few days prior to the incident. On Saturday, the landlord received an alarming phone call from an unknown individual, informing him about the alleged fraud that had occurred at his property. Rushing to the house, he discovered a wall had been broken inside, and a trunk left behind by the tenants was found. Several items he had provided to them were also reported missing, suggesting the criminals may have used the property for more than just the immediate transaction.
