Daljit Singh Chawdhary, an IPS officer of the 1990 batch from the Uttar Pradesh cadre, has recently been appointed as the Director General (DG) of the Border Security Force (BSF). This new responsibility comes in addition to his current role as the DG of the Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB), a position he assumed on January 23, 2024. The appointment follows the premature repatriation of Nitin Agrawal and is part of a strategic move by the government to enhance national security.

Chawdhary’s illustrious career spans over three decades, during which he has held various critical positions. Known for his exemplary service, he has been awarded multiple medals, including four Police Medals for Gallantry, the Police Medal for Meritorious Service, the President’s Police Medal for Distinguished Service, and the Ati Utkrisht Seva Medal. His reputation as a marksman and a qualified skydiver adds to his distinguished profile.

In addition to his role in the BSF, Chawdhary was also given the additional charge of the National Security Guard (NSG) in February 2024. The NSG, also known as the “black cats,” is India’s elite counter-terrorism unit, responsible for handling terrorism and anti-hijacking operations. Chawdhary’s leadership was crucial during a period marked by increased security challenges.

Chawdhary is particularly known for his role in counter-terrorism operations. He has been involved in numerous ‘encounters’, showcasing his bravery and dedication. Chawdhary has been awarded five Gallantry Awards (Veerta Puraskar) for his courage. During his tenure as the SSP of Etawah and DIG of Kanpur Range, he faced over 50 dacoits, resulting in the death of numerous criminals and the surrender of many others. Chawdhary has also served as the Captain of STF and in various districts, including as ADG (Law and Order) in Uttar Pradesh.

Chawdhary’s tenure in various roles has demonstrated his ability to manage complex security operations effectively. His service on Central Deputation since 2017, including key positions in the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) and the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), has equipped him with extensive experience in dealing with national security issues.

The government’s decision to entrust him with the additional charge of the BSF underscores his capability and the trust placed in his leadership. As the BSF DG, Chawdhary will oversee the security of India’s borders, further enhancing the country’s defense against external threats.

Daljit Singh Chawdhary’s appointment reflects a broader strategy to fortify India’s security framework by leveraging the expertise of seasoned officers. His distinguished service record and leadership qualities make him a pivotal figure in the country’s ongoing efforts to ensure national safety and stability.
