Cyber Attacks, Fake Bomb Threats: Russia Wreaks Havoc On Ukraine With Hybrid War As Tensions Escalate

Russia has yet to send soldiers into Ukraine, but it is already creating havoc with a hybrid war that includes cyber strikes and bogus bomb threats, according to officials there.

According to the Wall Street Journal, 1,000 anonymous bomb threats were made on roughly 10,000 distinct places in Ukraine in January alone.

According to officials, the bomb threats are the latest in a series of destabilising methods used by Russia against the country. In January, other Ukrainian government websites were also breached, defaced, and hacked with malware.

“Russia’s number one job is to destabilise us from within,” Oleksiy Danilov, an advisor to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, told the newspaper. “They intend to suffocate our economy.”

On Saturday, American officials issued a similar warning about Russian cyber threats.

According to the federal Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency, American organisations could experience cyber turmoil as a result of a hypothetical Russian attack on Ukraine, which the White House has warned against.

“Over the last decade, the Russian government has exploited cyber as a critical component of their force projection, including previously in Ukraine in the 2015 timeframe,” the agency said in a statement.

“While there are no specific serious threats to the United States homeland at this time, we are wary of the possibility that the Russian government would contemplate intensifying its destabilising actions in ways that may damage people outside of Ukraine.”
