Minister’s Remarks

Minister Manohar Lal emphasized that the CSIRT-Power facility marks a significant step in protecting India’s vital power infrastructure. He highlighted the evolving nature of threats, noting that cyberattacks have become a serious and growing concern, capable of causing extensive disruptions with wide-ranging consequences. As a key component of national infrastructure, the power sector is particularly vulnerable to such threats.

What is CSIRT?
A Computer Security Incident Response Team (CSIRT) is a specialized group of IT professionals that assists organizations in assessing, managing, and preventing cybersecurity-related incidents. Their primary goal is to respond quickly and efficiently to security incidents, helping to regain control and minimize damage.

Why is CSIRT-Power essential?
The creation of CSIRT-Power comes at a critical time as the power sector undergoes rapid digital transformation, expanding its attack surface and increasing vulnerability to cyberattacks. Previous sub-sectoral Computer Emergency Response Teams (CERTs) lacked the legal authority, resources, and skilled personnel necessary to address sophisticated cyber threats effectively. CSIRT-Power aims to bridge this gap and bolster the power sector’s resilience against cyber threats.
