The global tech industry was stirred after the U.S. Department of Defense labeled AI startup Anthropic a “supply chain risk.” However, amid the decision, three of the world’s largest cloud companies—Google, Microsoft, and Amazon—have clarified that Anthropic’s AI models, particularly Claude, will remain available for non-defense projects.

The reassurance from these tech giants has brought relief to thousands of companies and developers who rely on Claude and similar AI models for their digital platforms and cloud-based systems.

Scope of the Pentagon’s Decision

The U.S. Department of Defense announced on Thursday that it had designated Anthropic as a “supply chain risk.” The label is typically used for foreign adversarial companies, but this time it was applied to an American AI startup.

Under the decision, the Pentagon will remove Claude models from its systems, and defense contractors will be required to certify that they are not using Anthropic’s models in defense-related contracts.

The dispute reportedly escalated after Anthropic declined to make its technology available without restrictions for certain sensitive uses, including large-scale surveillance and fully autonomous weapons systems.

Cloud Providers Offer Assurance

Following the development, Google issued a statement clarifying that Anthropic’s products will continue to be available for general commercial and cloud use.

A company spokesperson said the Pentagon’s decision does not prevent collaboration with Anthropic on non-defense projects. Similarly, Microsoft and Amazon reassured customers that Claude models will continue to operate on their platforms.

Microsoft noted that after reviewing the decision, its legal team concluded that Claude can still be integrated across various platforms, including corporate AI tools and developer services.

Claude Integrated Across Major Cloud Platforms

Anthropic’s AI models are already integrated into some of the world’s largest cloud platforms.

  • On Google Cloud, Claude is available through the Vertex AI platform.
  • On Amazon Web Services (AWS), it is offered via the Bedrock platform.
  • Claude is also integrated into parts of Microsoft’s broader AI ecosystem.

According to technology experts, the joint reassurance from these companies is significant because Anthropic’s AI models are deeply embedded in global cloud infrastructure.

Investments and Rising Valuation

Anthropic has attracted substantial investment from the tech industry. Google is a major investor and has committed billions of dollars to the startup. Reports suggest the company’s potential valuation could reach $350 billion.

Amazon has also made a significant investment in Anthropic, whose value has increased considerably over time.

Impact on Defense Contractors

Despite assurances from cloud providers, the Pentagon’s decision is already affecting the defense sector. Some defense technology firms have reportedly instructed employees to avoid using Claude and to adopt alternative AI platforms.

Sources indicate that several companies are now evaluating competing AI solutions from other providers.

Anthropic’s CEO has indicated that the company may challenge the decision in court.

He emphasized that the Pentagon’s order applies only to the use of Claude in defense contracts and does not impose a ban on consumers, businesses, or cloud service customers.

Industry analysts believe the dispute could intensify global policy debates around the security, ethics, and governance of artificial intelligence in the coming years.
