The Chhattisgarh government has taken major administrative action against a senior Indian Police Service officer following a woman’s complaint, suspending 2003-batch IPS officer Ratan Lal Dangi with immediate effect. The decision comes in response to allegations of physical and mental harassment, along with claims of financial irregularities.
Prima Facie Conduct Violations Found
According to the official order, a preliminary assessment found prima facie evidence suggesting violations of service conduct rules. The allegations include failure to maintain conduct befitting his position, breach of moral standards, misuse of official influence, and deviation from established procedures. Authorities believe that such conduct not only reflects on individual accountability but also impacts the overall image of the police department.
The suspension order also noted that the alleged incidents were widely circulated across electronic and social media platforms, adversely affecting the credibility of the department. Taking serious note of the situation, the government moved swiftly to initiate disciplinary action.

Departmental inquiry ordered; officer restricted to headquarters
The government has also ordered a detailed departmental inquiry to establish the facts and determine accountability. During the suspension period, Ratan Lal Dangi will be required to remain stationed at the police headquarters in Nava Raipur and will not be allowed to leave without prior permission from the competent authority.
As per rules, the officer will be entitled to subsistence allowance during the suspension period, but his administrative powers and responsibilities will remain curtaed. The action has been taken under the provisions of the All India Services (Discipline and Appeal) Rules, 1969.
Complaint by woman triggered action
The case originates from a complaint filed on October 15 last year by a woman, reportedly the wife of a sub-inspector. In her complaint, she accused the officer of physical and mental harassment, as well as financial misconduct.
Following the complaint, an internal committee was constituted to examine the allegations. Based on its preliminary findings, the government decided to proceed with the suspension and further inquiry.
Officer denies allegations, alleges blackmail
Meanwhile, Ratan Lal Dangi has categorically denied all allegations, calling them baseless and part of a conspiracy to malign his reputation. He has also filed a counter-complaint, accusing the woman of blackmail.
With both sides presenting conflicting claims, the matter has become more complex, and the outcome of the departmental inquiry is expected to play a crucial role in determining the facts.
Strong signal on accountability and conduct
Experts view the action as a clear message from the administration that violations of service conduct and ethical standards will not be tolerated at any level. Particularly in cases involving senior officers, accountability and transparency are being strictly enforced.
Overall, the case extends beyond an individual officer, touching upon broader concerns such as administrative accountability, women’s safety, and institutional discipline. The findings of the ongoing inquiry are likely to determine the course of action ahead and clarify the veracity of the allegations.
