From Wallets to Websites: How Cybercrime Drained ₹107 crores from Chhattisgarh

RAIPUR–   Chhattisgarh has become a significant cybercriminals, as revealed by recent data presented in the State Assembly. Over the past 18 months, a staggering 1,301 cybercrime cases have been officially registered, leading to a collective financial loss exceeding ₹107 crore for victims across the state.

Efforts to Recover Lost Funds

Despite the substantial losses, law enforcement agencies in Chhattisgarh have made some headway in recovering illicitly gained funds. Deputy Chief Minister Vijay Sharma reported that ₹3.69 crore has been successfully recovered and refunded to victims in a portion of these cases. This indicates active, albeit challenging, efforts by the authorities to mitigate the financial damage inflicted by cybercriminals.

Strategic Response and Infrastructure Development

In response to the escalating cybercrime threat, the Chhattisgarh government has initiated a multi-pronged strategy to enhance its defense capabilities. Key measures include the establishment of a dedicated State Cyber Police Station, complemented by five Range Cyber Police Stations, and specialized cyber cells at the district level. A Cyber Forensic Lab has also been set up in Raipur to aid in complex investigations. Furthermore, police officers are undergoing advanced training in cybercrime subjects through reputable institutions, alongside specialized training under the Cyber Commando Scheme, to bolster their expertise in tackling digital offenses.

Public Awareness and Reporting Mechanisms

Recognizing the importance of public participation in crime prevention, the state is actively conducting awareness programs to educate citizens about various forms of cyber fraud and how to protect themselves. A crucial resource for victims is the 24×7 Cyber Crime Helpline, accessible via the number 1930. This helpline facilitates immediate complaint registration and enables swift coordination with financial institutions to place suspicious transactions on hold, minimizing potential losses. The National Cybercrime Reporting Portal (NCRP) also plays a vital role, with 67,389 online fraud complaints totaling ₹791 crore lodged from Chhattisgarh between 2023 and June 2025, from which money was recovered and refunded in 1,820 cases.
