Today, the Centre for Police Technology successfully conducted an insightful and highly relevant webinar on the topic “VoIP Enabled Crime, Spoof Calls, Web/App-Based Calls, and Legal & Technical Challenges During Interrogation.” The session focused on the rapidly evolving landscape of digital communication crimes and the investigative complexities faced by law enforcement agencies.

The webinar featured two distinguished experts, Mr. Angad Maurya and Mr. Vishal, who brought practical field experience and technical clarity to the discussion. Both speakers elaborated on the growing misuse of VoIP platforms, caller ID spoofing techniques, and web-based communication applications that enable criminals to conceal their identity and operate across jurisdictions.

Mr. Angad Maurya explained the technological architecture behind VoIP platforms, including SIP protocols, virtual numbers, call masking tools, and cloud telephony infrastructure. He demonstrated how fraudsters exploit these technologies to conduct impersonation scams, digital arrest frauds, and financial extortion. He also outlined the importance of call detail records (CDRs), IP logs, server mapping, and coordination with service providers in tracing such crimes.

Mr. Vishal shared step-by-step investigation flows from real spoof call cases, highlighting practical challenges faced during interrogation. He emphasized the difficulty in attribution due to VPN usage, proxy servers, layered communication apps, and international routing of calls. He also discussed evidentiary requirements, preservation of digital logs, mutual legal assistance procedures, and maintaining the chain of custody.
