The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has registered a bribery case against three individuals, including two Customs and Central Excise Inspectors at Rajiv Gandhi International Airport (RGIA), Hyderabad, and an officer from Canara Bank’s Customs Duty Collection Counter. The case also includes unknown others allegedly involved in the incident.

According to the complaint, the Customs officials demanded and accepted a bribe of Rs 50,000 on October 5, 2024, to facilitate customs clearance for the complainant and his family, who had arrived at Hyderabad Airport from Jeddah. The bribe was allegedly sought to expedite the clearance process, a violation of their official duties.

Following the registration of the case, the CBI conducted searches at five locations across Hyderabad, Muzaffarpur (Bihar), and Mansa (Punjab). The searches resulted in the recovery of Rs 4.76 lakh in cash, along with several incriminating documents that are now part of the investigation. The CBI stated that it is committed to addressing corruption and will thoroughly investigate the roles of the accused. The case highlights persistent issues of bribery and corruption within government agencies, particularly those involved in customs operations.

This development underscores the importance of maintaining transparency and accountability in public service roles. Corruption not only undermines trust in government institutions but also affects citizens’ experiences, especially during international travel. Authorities have not yet disclosed further details about the investigation or the potential charges against the accused. The recovery of substantial cash and documents suggests a deeper network that may involve additional individuals.

The CBI has reiterated its appeal to the public to report any instances of corruption to ensure timely action. Investigations are ongoing, and updates are expected as the case progresses.
