The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has arrested Taman Singh Sonwani, the former chairman of the Chhattisgarh Public Service Commission (PSC), and Shravan Kumar Goyal, the director of Bajrang Power and Ispat Ltd, for their alleged involvement in a Rs 45 lakh bribery case.

According to officials, Goyal allegedly paid the bribe to ensure the selection of his son, Sashank, and daughter-in-law, Bhumika Kataria, as deputy collectors in the state’s PSC examinations. The payments were reportedly made in two installments of Rs 20 lakh and Rs 25 lakh through Gramin Vikas Samiti, a Raipur-based organization linked to Sonwani’s relatives.

The CBI alleges that the bribe facilitated manipulation of the recruitment process to favor Goyal’s family members. Sonwani, as chairman, allegedly used his position to influence the selection process.

Both individuals were apprehended following an in-depth investigation by the CBI, which uncovered evidence of monetary transactions and their connection to the recruitment scam.

The arrests mark a significant step in addressing corruption in public service recruitment, a matter of grave concern that undermines meritocracy and public trust. The agency continues to probe the case, aiming to expose other individuals who might be involved in similar malpractice.

This development highlights the pressing need for stricter checks and transparent recruitment processes to uphold the integrity of public services.
