The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has arrested a Sales Officer of Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited (HPCL) posted in Chandrapur, Maharashtra, for allegedly demanding and accepting a bribe of ₹1 lakh.
The case relates to corruption in the handover process of an HPCL retail outlet. The arrest follows a complaint alleging abuse of official position to extract illegal gratification.
Modus Operandi
According to the CBI, the accused officer allegedly demanded a bribe of ₹2 lakh from the complainant to facilitate the formal handover of an HPCL retail outlet to the complainant’s wife, who is the proprietor of the outlet.

When the complainant expressed his inability to arrange the full amount immediately, the accused reportedly agreed to accept ₹1 lakh as part payment. However, he allegedly insisted that the remaining amount be paid after completion of the official work, indicating a planned and conditional demand for illegal gratification.
Arrest and Seizure
Acting on the complaint, the CBI registered a case on January 16, 2026. A trap was laid on January 17, 2026, during which the accused was caught red-handed while demanding and accepting ₹1 lakh from the complainant.
The accused was immediately taken into custody following the successful trap operation. Further investigation into the case is currently underway.
