Mumbai | Correspondent: Bollywood actress Bipasha Basu’s sister, Vijayeta Basu, has fallen prey to an elaborate cyber fraud. Scammers duped her through a fake parcel delivery link, obtaining her ICICI Bank credit card details and using them to make a fraudulent payment of nearly ₹1.8 lakh at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in France.

Fake Delivery Message Triggers the Fraud

According to police reports, the incident occurred on September 27, 2025. Vijayeta received a text message from an unknown number stating: “Your parcel delivery has been attempted for the second time. Please confirm your details, or your parcel will be returned.”

“Centre for Police Technology” Launched as Common Platform for Police, OEMs, and Vendors to Drive Smart Policing

Believing it to be a legitimate courier update, she clicked on the attached link and entered her credit card details to pay a supposed “delivery charge.” Moments later, she received an alert from her bank notifying her of a transaction worth EUR 1,730.76 (approximately ₹1.79 lakh) made at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in France.

Immediate Action and Police Complaint

Realising she had been duped, Vijayeta promptly blocked her card and registered a preliminary complaint on the National Cybercrime Portal (cybercrime.gov.in). On November 2, 2025, she filed a detailed FIR at NM Joshi Marg Police Station in Mumbai.

The case has been registered under Sections 66(C) and 66(D) of the Information Technology (IT) Act, which deal with identity theft and cheating by impersonation using computer resources. The cybercrime unit has begun a technical probe into the source of the fraudulent link and the mobile number used by the scammers.

A Professional Targeted

Vijayeta Basu, who works as a marketing manager, is known to be active on social media. Experts suggest that the fraudsters may have used publicly available data to personalize the phishing message, making it appear authentic.

Experts Warn of Growing Phishing Scams

Cybersecurity professionals describe this case as a “classic phishing scam” — one that lures victims into revealing sensitive financial details through convincing, fake delivery notifications. They advise users to verify parcel-related messages only through official courier websites or apps, and never share card details, OTPs, or banking credentials via random links.

Police Advisory: “Avoid clicking on unsolicited links or messages. In case of fraud, immediately notify your bank and report the incident to the cyber helpline at 1930.” This incident once again underscores the importance of digital awareness and caution in an era where online frauds continue to evolve with alarming sophistication.
