The central government has made biometric Aadhaar authentication mandatory for all domestic LPG consumers, requiring them to complete electronic Know Your Customer (e-KYC) verification. The directive comes amid concerns over cooking gas supply shortages and aims to streamline distribution and prevent misuse within the subsidy and delivery system.

Authorities have urged consumers to complete biometric verification through official platforms or by contacting their LPG distributors to ensure continued access to LPG services and avoid disruptions in supply.

Mandatory Biometric e-KYC for LPG Consumers

Under the new directive issued by the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, all domestic LPG users must complete Biometric Aadhaar Authentication as part of the e-KYC process. The government has stated that consumers can complete the verification through the mobile applications of their respective Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs) along with the Aadhaar FaceRD app.

The ministry has encouraged consumers to complete the process as soon as possible. Those requiring assistance can approach their LPG distributors or visit official portals for further guidance on completing the authentication process.

Biometric verification is expected to link LPG consumer accounts more securely with Aadhaar-based identity records, ensuring that subsidies and supplies reach legitimate beneficiaries.

Move Linked to Supply Challenges

The decision comes at a time when several regions have reported concerns about LPG availability and delays in cylinder deliveries. Supply disruptions linked to global energy market uncertainties have contributed to pressure on the domestic cooking gas distribution network.

Recent reports indicate that many households across the country experienced delays in receiving LPG cylinders, with some consumers even paying extra to secure refills during periods of limited availability.

By strengthening authentication measures, the government aims to ensure that the distribution system functions more efficiently and that available supply reaches registered consumers.

Preventing Misuse and Improving Distribution

Officials have indicated that biometric verification can help reduce irregularities, duplication, and misuse in LPG connections. Linking consumer accounts with Aadhaar-based biometric data is expected to improve monitoring of LPG distribution and prevent fraudulent or duplicate connections within the system.

The move is also intended to support targeted delivery of benefits under government schemes and maintain transparency in subsidy allocation.

Consumers are advised to complete the verification through official applications or distributor assistance to ensure continued access to LPG refills without disruption.

Aadhaar-Based Authentication Framework

Aadhaar is India’s national digital identity system that stores demographic and biometric data, including fingerprints and iris scans, to verify the identity of residents. The system is widely used for authentication in various government services and welfare programs.

By integrating Aadhaar biometric verification with LPG services, authorities aim to enhance identity verification and strengthen the overall integrity of the public distribution framework.
