In a heartfelt post published on his personal blog, Bill Gates explained his decision to accelerate the pace of his giving, saying he wants his legacy to be defined by impact rather than wealth.

“People will say a lot of things about me when I die, but I am determined that ‘he died rich’ will not be one of them,” Gates wrote. “There are too many urgent problems to solve for me to hold onto resources that could be used to help people.”

The billionaire committed to donating 99% of his fortune through the Gates Foundation over the next two decades, with the foundation’s activities expected to wind down completely by 2045. Gates’ decision marks a significant escalation in his philanthropic timeline and reflects the urgent global challenges he wants to help address—ranging from health equity and climate change to poverty and education.

Gates Praises Zuckerberg’s 90% Giving Commitment

In a recent interview, Gates lauded Mark Zuckerberg and Priscilla Chan for pledging to donate 90% of their wealth through the Chan-Zuckerberg Initiative, which supports science, education, and social justice.

“There are exemplars, like Mark Zuckerberg, who through the Chan-Zuckerberg Initiative is committed to give over 90% of his wealth, and he’s off to a very good start,” Gates said.

He acknowledged Zuckerberg as a prominent member of the next generation of philanthropists and highlighted the value of ongoing conversations the two share about large-scale charitable giving.

The Giving Pledge and the Rise of Tech Philanthropy

Both Gates and Zuckerberg are signatories of the Giving Pledge, a campaign co-founded by Bill Gates, Melinda French Gates, and Warren Buffett, which encourages billionaires to commit the majority of their wealth to charitable causes either during their lifetimes or in their wills.

Gates emphasized that the movement is gaining momentum, stating, “There are dozens and dozens of tech entrepreneurs in the Giving Pledge making remarkable contributions.” This growing wave of tech-driven philanthropy signals a significant cultural shift in how modern wealth holders are choosing to give back.

As the Gates Foundation prepares to scale down its operations over the next two decades, Gates’ latest pledge cements his vision of redistributing wealth for global good—setting a powerful example for today’s billionaires and tomorrow’s changemakers.
