A Bihar engineer has alleged that a woman he met on a dating portal cheated him of nearly ₹1.5 crore over three months.

How Did the Engineer Meet the Woman?

Deepak Kumar Jha, an engineer from Darbhanga, Bihar, was searching for a life partner when he registered on a dating portal. There, he came into contact with a woman who introduced herself as Shruti. Their initial conversations gradually developed into regular telephone calls, during which the woman allegedly gained his confidence.

According to the complaint, the woman discussed marriage and their future together, leading Jha to believe that he had found a suitable partner. He also shared his plans to purchase a house and save money for his wedding. Police said the relationship continued for nearly three months, although the two never communicated through video calls.

How Was ₹1.5 Crore Allegedly Transferred?

The woman allegedly told Jha that she worked at an investment bank and could help him earn substantial returns through investments in the stock market. Trusting her claims, he began transferring money into different bank accounts provided by her.

Investigators said Jha initially transferred his personal savings before sending money belonging to his parents and sister. Over approximately three months, the transfers reportedly reached nearly ₹1.5 crore. In his complaint, Jha identified 30 separate bank accounts into which the money had been transferred.

The alleged fraud continued as the woman encouraged him to invest further, claiming that the funds would generate significant profits and help secure his financial future.

What Raised Suspicions About the Investment?

Jha became suspicious when he needed money and requested the return of his investment. The woman allegedly claimed that the investment system was undergoing maintenance and that the funds would be returned within two or three days.

When the money did not arrive, he contacted her again. She allegedly demanded an additional payment of 25% of his invested amount before releasing the funds. Jha then suspected that he had been cheated.

His attempts to contact the woman subsequently failed, as her mobile number became unreachable. He approached the cybercrime helpline on 1930 and later submitted a written complaint at Darbhanga Cyber Police Station.

What Has the Police Investigation Revealed?

Darbhanga Cyber Police have registered a preliminary case and begun investigating the financial transactions. Deputy Superintendent of Police Bipin Bihari confirmed that Jha had complained about being cheated by a woman he met through a dating portal.

Police said their preliminary examination found that the photograph provided by the woman was fake. Investigators are examining her social media identity and attempting to establish her actual identity and possible involvement of other individuals.

Authorities are also collecting information about the 30 bank accounts identified by the complainant to determine who operated them and where the money was transferred.

The investigation remains underway, with police examining the alleged investment network, the recipient accounts and the circumstances surrounding the transfers. The identity of the woman and the roles of any other suspected participants have yet to be established.
