BEWARE! That Person Posing As Tenant On Call Could Lead To An Empty Bank Account
Let’s assume that you are a house owner in a city and it’s time when your tenant has vacated the flat, so you are under real pressure of finding a new tenant. You advertise the to-let board at your house everywhere, every online site, and one day you suddenly receive a call asking about the vacant house.
You are happy because you are getting a tenant and the other person asks you for a mode of payment and all your money is gone the moment you scan the QR Code sent by him!!
Does it sound untrue that just a simple code could lead to an empty bank account?
Beware! For this is not a prank rather a warning for the consumers to not fall into the tenant trap. These are the new means devised by cyber criminals to make money.
After the pandemic, many landlords faced the pressure of no tenants and it became the right time for fraudsters to take advantage of the vulnerability of innocent people.
Aijaz, a resident of Austin Town fell into the tenant trap when his wife received a call regarding the query for the 2BHK flat which the couple wanted to let. The person on the call was very sure of taking the flat and asked the process for the advance payment. The couple asked the man to transfer money to their bank account but he insisted on online payment.
Later he sent a QR Code to the couple, which they scanned and Rs 45,000 in their bank account got deducted. The perpetrator then switched off their phone and became unreachable. After trying for some time they went to the Central CEN POLICE Station and reported the case.
The police acted promptly and froze the wife’s account and were able to retrieve Rs 40,000 but the sore of being cheated remains with the couple.
This kind of mishappening has been common in big cities nowadays due to increasing to-let boards in residential areas. This becomes the hotspot for malicious criminals who are ready to pounce on money.
The police said, “There are many websites which directly provide the info regarding vacant houses, but this data is being misused by some people now.”
There have been many such cases that have made landlords a victim of cybercriminals posing as tenants.
So, the next time someone calls you posing as a tenant through a phone call, make sure that you meet them personally, verify his identity, and then give them a room to stay because your safety is of prime importance.
