A Special CBI Court in Lucknow has convicted Ram Swaroop Mishra, Branch Manager of Bank of Baroda’s Baskhari Branch in Ambedkar Nagar, Uttar Pradesh, sentencing him to five years’ imprisonment along with a ₹50,000 fine in a corruption case.
The case originated from a complaint filed in March 2017, alleging that the manager demanded illegal gratification to release the remaining portion of a sanctioned loan under the Kamdhenu Yojana.
Modus Operandi
According to the investigation, the complainant had been sanctioned a loan of ₹20.25 lakh, of which only a part had been credited. The branch manager allegedly placed the account on hold without valid reason.
When the complainant approached him for clarification, Mishra demanded a bribe of ₹30,000 to lift the hold. After negotiations, he agreed to accept ₹25,000 via a signed blank cheque as illegal payment.
The CBI conducted a trap operation, during which the accused was caught red-handed while taking the cheque as a bribe. The cheque was recovered from his possession on the spot.
Arrest and Seizure
Following the successful trap, CBI officers apprehended the branch manager and seized the signed blank cheque intended as the bribe.
After completing the investigation, the agency filed a chargesheet on 31 March 2017. The trial concluded with the court convicting and sentencing the accused on 12 November 2025.
