Bahraich | Tension erupted in Ramgaon area after the death of a medical store owner who was arrested on rape charges and later died in police custody. The incident triggered protests by the deceased man’s family and local residents who raised serious allegations against the police. The situation intensified after a murder case was registered against the station house officer and two other policemen following preliminary findings.
According to reports, a local resident had accused medical store owner Ramgopal (55) of entering his house on February 22 and sexually assaulting his 10-year-old daughter. Acting on the complaint, police arrested Ramgopal late Thursday evening from his medical store located near Kurwa Chauraha and brought him to Ramgaon police station.

The family has alleged that the police showed serious negligence while the accused was in custody. They claimed that after the death occurred at the police station, the body was allegedly left outside the house by police personnel who then fled from the scene. Family members later took the body to a medical college, where doctors declared Ramgopal dead.
The news of the death spread quickly, triggering anger among villagers and relatives. The family members along with local residents carried the body and staged a protest by surrounding the police station at night, accusing police of murder and demanding strict action against those responsible.
Fearing escalation of the situation, police from several nearby stations were deployed to control the crowd. Administrative officials intervened to restore order and initiated a preliminary inquiry into the incident.
During the initial investigation, the role of the police personnel was found suspicious, leading to the registration of a murder case against the station house officer, a constable and one other policeman. Authorities stated that further departmental action would be taken based on the investigation report.
The incident has also raised questions about law and order management in the region. Local residents said that the safety and health of a person in police custody is the responsibility of law enforcement authorities. The family alleged that after the arrest, the medical store owner was not provided proper medical assistance.
Police officials have assured a fair and impartial investigation into the matter and said strict action will be taken if anyone is found guilty. The administration described the custodial death as a serious issue and stated that all aspects of the case will be thoroughly examined.
Experts emphasise that transparent investigations are essential in cases of custodial deaths to ensure justice for the victim’s family and prevent recurrence of such incidents in the future. Human rights organisations have also said they are monitoring the case closely.
At present, police and administrative teams are continuing the investigation. Authorities have appealed to the public to maintain peace, and security arrangements have been strengthened in the area following the incident.
