Australian Telecom Company’s Fake Call Centre Running In Kolkata Busted, 2 Held
KOLKATA: Two conmen were nabbed from a building in Lake Gardens, south Kolkata, for running a call centre and duping customers abroad by posing as representatives of an Australian telecom company.
Officers from the detective department’s anti-rowdy team raided a building on Lake Gardens Road based on specific information, police said, and arrested two people who were present.
Men pretended to be customer care executives from a Melbourne-based telecommunications firm.
They persuaded users to install software on their laptop or phone that would allow them to make online payments. Once the programme is installed on a smartphone, the fraudsters have access to the screen of the client’s device and can readily see their personal and banking information.
The clients’ Net banking information is then utilised to move funds fraudulently from their accounts to their own e-wallets or bank accounts.
Officers stated at least two other youngsters were involved in the same ring, but they could not be apprehended on Tuesday since they were not present during the operation.
