Anthropic has reduced junior technical hiring as AI agents take on more work, according to a new company study.
How Much Has Junior Hiring Declined?
Anthropic’s study, titled How Employment Is Changing at Anthropic, found that the share of hiring for junior technical roles fell from 27 per cent to 9 per cent between May 2025 and May 2026.
The company said AI adoption had improved productivity across engineering, sales, legal and finance. Hiring priorities have also shifted towards candidates who can effectively use AI tools. The proportion of employees working in technical departments declined from 61 per cent to 56 per cent over the past year.

Are AI Agents Working More Than Humans?
Anthropic found that AI agent working hours first exceeded human working hours in March 2026. Agent hours subsequently reached six times those of human handlers. Researchers compared 192 engineers who adopted coding agents with 74 who did not. They found increased output among adopters, without a difference in the rates at which AI-generated and human-written code was subsequently removed.
AI adoption also extended beyond engineering. One account executive said Claude automations had replaced approximately 20 per cent of previous tasks, allowing interactions with 30 per cent more customers. However, AI continued to require substantial human involvement. Claude sessions reportedly spent around 80 per cent of their time awaiting human input.
What Happens to Employees Whose Roles Change?
Anthropic has introduced an early warning system to identify jobs potentially affected by AI and help employees move into other positions. Employees with more than one year of service were 50 per cent more likely to change departments, according to the study.
The company also acknowledged concerns about human work being displaced. Even tasks involving internal greetings and messages had been delegated to AI agents, raising questions about the future responsibilities of human writers.
How Is AI Changing the Wider Job Market?
Anthropic’s findings come as technology companies balance AI-driven productivity with employment changes and rising operating costs. Accenture reportedly introduced a monthly AI usage limit of $29 (around ₹2700) per employee, while Microsoft, Meta and Uber have also restricted certain workplace AI tools.
Meanwhile, Oracle, Amazon and Meta have reduced staffing while increasing AI investments. Figures attributed to layoffs.fyi indicate that approximately 323 technology companies have eliminated more than 1.33 lakh positions this year.
Anthropic’s findings illustrate how AI adoption is changing hiring requirements, employee responsibilities and the distribution of work, even as organisations continue to assess its costs and practical limitations.
Anthropic’s experience highlights an emerging workforce challenge. AI agents are handling more tasks and improving productivity, while the company is reducing its share of junior technical hires. The findings raise important questions about how new professionals will enter the industry and gain experience as businesses increasingly rely on automation.
