What was meant to be a joyous preparation for a daughter’s wedding has turned into a nightmare for a family in Etmaduddaula. Jewellery painstakingly arranged for the occasion has allegedly been found to be fake, with the accused jeweller absconding after taking 11 grams of gold from the complainant.

The case pertains to Prakash Nagar in the Etmaduddaula area. According to complainant Yashpal Singh, he had jewellery made in 2024 for his daughter’s wedding from a neighbourhood jeweller, Sonu, a resident of Sushil Nagar. Sonu operated a small outlet under the name “Radhe-Radhe Jewellers.”

Singh said he trusted the jeweller because of his local presence and comparatively low making charges. After purchasing the ornaments, the family kept them safely at home in preparation for the wedding.

11 Grams of Gold Also Taken

The complainant alleged that he had additionally given 11 grams of his own gold to the jeweller to craft a special necklace for his daughter. Sonu had assured him that the piece would be ready soon.

However, when Singh visited the shop after a few days, he found it locked. The accused’s residence was also found shut. Upon inquiry, he learnt that the family had left the area.

Meanwhile, when Singh urgently needed money, he approached another jeweller to mortgage the wedding jewellery. After examining the ornaments, the jeweller reportedly refused to accept them, stating that the items were not made of genuine gold and contained only a negligible amount of the precious metal.

The revelation left the family stunned, especially with wedding preparations underway.

Alleged Delays, Then Disappearance

Singh claims that after persistent efforts, he managed to trace Sonu to a new address and demanded the return of his 11 grams of gold and the money paid for the jewellery. The accused allegedly kept assuring him that the ornaments would be replaced and sought more time.

Recently, however, the jeweller is said to have vacated that residence as well and fled with his family. Neighbours reportedly have no information about his current whereabouts.

FIR Registered, Fear Among Other Customers

Police have registered a case based on Singh’s complaint and stated that efforts are underway to trace the accused.

Following the incident, panic has spread in the locality. It is learnt that several other residents had also purchased jewellery from the same shop. After news of the alleged fraud surfaced, many women have reportedly started getting their ornaments tested at other jewellery stores to verify authenticity.

So far, no additional complaints have been filed, but apprehension is mounting among customers who fear they may also have been duped.

Caution Advised While Buying Gold

Local traders say that in an attempt to save on making charges, customers sometimes overlook proper verification. Experts advise buyers to always check for hallmark certification and insist on a proper bill while purchasing gold ornaments.

For now, police are searching for the absconding jeweller. As the investigation continues, the affected family faces not only financial loss but also uncertainty at a crucial time in their daughter’s life.
