The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation Health Department has sealed a manufacturing unit in the city’s Gota area after seizing 10,630 kilograms of suspected adulterated food products, including large stocks of tomato ketchup allegedly produced using potato paste instead of real tomatoes. Acting on regulatory intelligence, civic health officials inspected Aai Shri Khodiyar Grih Udyog located in Meldi Estate, where they uncovered wholesale operations preparing sauces, chutneys, and syrups with artificial additives. The municipal authorities impounded approximately 5,000 kilograms of finished condiments ready for commercial distribution alongside more than 5,000 kilograms of unrefined raw materials, while initiating formal proceedings to revoke the operating licence of the enterprise.

Processing Potato Powder and Chemical Additives into Sauce

According to details provided by civic food safety inspectors, the manufacturing unit relied on a deceptive production method to simulate commercial tomato ketchup without utilizing tomatoes. The raw potatoes were initially converted into a fine paste and dehydrated into a powdered form. Factory workers then allegedly blended this processed potato powder with water, heavy artificial food colorants, and synthetic flavouring agents to yield a thick red sauce matching the visual appearance of genuine tomato ketchup.

During the search across the production floor, inspectors found multiple large stainless-steel vats holding freshly mixed red sauce. The inspection party also confiscated commercial sachets ready for retail dispatch, sacks filled with bulk powder, and wide plastic drums storing semi-liquid pastes. The presence of these synthetic compounds and non-standard base substitutes prompted the Health Department to halt production immediately, preventing the finished packages from entering the retail market where consumers could purchase them under the impression of buying standard tomato condiments.

Regulatory Inspection, Sample Collection, and Licence Revocation

The municipal administration initiated regulatory measures after identifying clear indicators of food standard violations on the premises. Authorities expressed concern that products manufactured entirely without fresh tomatoes or natural tomato puree were being bottled, packed, and sold to distributors as tomato-derived condiments. In addition, the excessive dependence on artificial flavouring and synthetic colouring substances without standard verification raised serious safety concerns for general consumers.

To establish the exact chemical profile and ensure an airtight regulatory case, the municipal inspection team secured five statutory samples of the raw powders, semi-finished pastes, and packaged ketchup. These samples have been forwarded to an accredited food testing laboratory to evaluate the specific additives used, calculate nutritional divergence, and verify compliance with statutory standards. Municipal officials noted that formal penal action and licensing decisions would depend directly on the analytical findings from the laboratory report. For the present, the plant remains completely sealed to block further production.

Expanding Scrutiny Across City Food Processing Units

The enforcement drive in Gota marks the second major intervention by the civic health administration against spurious condiment manufacturers within a single week. Just two days prior to the inspection in Meldi Estate, health officials had raided an industrial facility in the Behrampura locality of Ahmedabad. That unit was similarly found manufacturing commercial tomato sauce batches by substituting tomatoes with industrial pastes and synthetic compounds, resulting in the confiscation of approximately 2,000 kilograms of adulterated goods.

The consecutive raids have brought light to widespread attempts by rogue food processors to manufacture tomato ketchup without fresh tomatoes across the city. Health officials confirmed that their immediate priority remains expediting laboratory tests for both seized batches to establish whether the ingredients pose direct public health risks. The findings will dictate whether the civic body pursues criminal prosecution against the factory proprietors in addition to standard administrative cancellations of commercial registrations.
