A woman judicial officer posted at a village court in Farrukhabad, Uttar Pradesh, has filed a police complaint accusing her husband and members of her in-laws’ family of dowry harassment, physical abuse, death threats, and pressuring her to terminate her pregnancy. Based on the complaint submitted by Manisha Sahu, authorities in Fatehpur have registered a case against her husband, Shashwat Gupta, alongside three other relatives, and initiated legal proceedings. The complainant has alleged that the accused repeatedly demanded additional dowry following the wedding, culminating in a demand for ₹30 lakh specifically to purchase a car, and subjected her to severe mistreatment when her family refused to yield to the pressure.

Financial Demands Began Prior to Marriage

According to the details outlined in the police complaint, the financial pressure on Manisha Sahu’s family commenced well before the formal wedding took place. Sahu was engaged to marry Shashwat Gupta, a resident of Nirala Nagar in Lucknow who works as an engineer in the merchant navy. Following their engagement, Gupta, his mother Renu Gupta, his brother Utkarsh, and a relative named Alok allegedly demanded ₹25 lakh as dowry from the bride’s parents. Sahu’s family subsequently paid ₹8.5 lakh against the demand, while an additional ₹4 lakh was taken to cover wedding venue reservations and related arrangements. The couple married on November 24, 2025, after which Sahu moved into the matrimonial home in Nirala Nagar. While household conditions remained normal for a brief initial period, the complainant stated that domestic relations rapidly soured as her in-laws began insisting on additional monetary contributions.

Escalation of Violence and ₹30 Lakh Demand for Vehicle

The situation intensified after Sahu’s mother-in-law allegedly demanded an additional payment of ₹30 lakh to buy a vehicle. The complaint states that when Sahu and her family refused to transfer the money, she was subjected to physical assaults and sustained verbal mistreatment. Sahu also documented separate allegations concerning her husband’s conduct while she was posted in Ghaziabad, stating that he repeatedly assaulted her, directed verbal abuse at her, and issued explicit threats against her life. The complainant maintained that the persistent disputes surrounding supplementary dowry escalated steadily over several months, resulting in substantial mental and physical trauma throughout the marriage and rendering her living conditions untenable.

Pressure to Terminate Pregnancy and Matrimonial Eviction

The complaint further details incidents concerning Sahu’s pregnancy and her eventual expulsion from the marital home. In January 2026, her in-laws allegedly mounted pressure on her to terminate her pregnancy, subsequently forcing her out of the residence as the harassment deepened. Sahu gave birth to a son on July 28, following which another confrontation occurred. According to the complaint, her husband and mother-in-law physically assaulted her brother the day after the child’s birth. Police investigators have noted that the registered charges encompass the financial demands, physical violence, criminal intimidation, and coercion regarding the pregnancy. Authorities have initiated an inquiry into the sequence of events, while emphasizing that the allegations against the named individuals will be established through the formal legal process.
