The legal troubles of Samajwadi Party national general secretary Mohammad Azam Khan continue to mount. The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has initiated fresh action against him in connection with alleged misuse of government funds and financial irregularities in the construction of Jauhar University. After questioning Azam Khan for nearly six hours in jail on Tuesday, an ED deputy director filed a complaint at Azeem Nagar police station in the evening against the SP leader, the Maulana Mohammad Ali Jauhar Trust and five firms.

The allegations relate to corruption, money laundering and the alleged misappropriation of ₹85.81 crore in government funds used for the university’s construction.

Who Has Been Named in the Case?

The complaint filed by the ED’s Lucknow office raises questions about the cost of construction at the university, contracts awarded to various companies and the utilisation of government funds. Apart from Azam Khan, the entities named in the case include the Maulana Mohammad Ali Jauhar Trust, M.S. & S. Enterprises, S/S Chike Associate Private Limited and other firms. The agency suspects that irregularities may have occurred in the use of government funds through construction contracts and related financial transactions.

How Were Construction Costs Allegedly Misreported?

According to the complaint, the actual construction cost of Jauhar University was allegedly understated. It is further alleged that contracts for various construction works were awarded to other companies and that the money received from these entities was subsequently used for the university’s construction. The investigating agency has raised questions about the process followed and the source and utilisation of the funds.

Why Is Building Ownership Under Scrutiny?

Another significant aspect of the case concerns the ownership of the auditorium and other buildings constructed on the university campus using government funds. The complaint alleges that these buildings were transferred into the name of the Maulana Mohammad Ali Jauhar Trust.

The ED is examining the source of the funds used for construction, the channels through which the money was spent and the procedures followed in determining ownership of the properties. The investigation is also expected to focus on the role of the companies involved in the construction work and their financial dealings with the trust.

Following the registration of the case, financial transactions, construction-related contracts and documents concerning the ownership of the trust’s properties have become key areas of scrutiny. The agency will investigate the allegations on the basis of the complaint and relevant evidence. The claims of embezzlement and money laundering remain allegations, and the final findings will depend on the outcome of the investigation and the legal proceedings.

How Many Cases Does Azam Khan Face?

Azam Khan was once considered one of the most influential Muslim leaders in Uttar Pradesh politics. A senior Samajwadi Party leader, he has faced numerous legal cases over the past several years. Following the formation of the Yogi Adityanath-led government in Uttar Pradesh, multiple cases were registered against him over a range of allegations.

These cases reportedly include allegations of cheating, criminal intimidation, conspiracy to commit robbery and forcibly taking away livestock belonging to economically weaker sections. The number of cases registered against Azam Khan is now said to have reached 105, adding to his legal and political challenges.

However, the allegations and legal status differ from one case to another. Each matter must therefore be assessed independently, taking into account the specific charges, available evidence and relevant court orders. The registration of a case or the filing of a complaint does not, by itself, establish guilt.

What Will the ED Investigate Next?

The latest case linked to Jauhar University centres on the alleged misuse of government funds, financial irregularities in construction activities and questions surrounding the ownership of buildings developed on the campus. With the ED filing its complaint, the role of the trust and the companies associated with the construction work is likely to come under further scrutiny.

Documents and financial records examined during the investigation will be crucial in determining whether government funds were used for their intended purposes or whether any rules were violated. The investigation will also seek to establish the nature of the transactions and the responsibilities of the entities involved.

The allegations involving ₹85.81 crore raise questions about the use of government funds, the reporting of construction costs and the ownership of buildings at Jauhar University. The investigation will depend on financial records, construction contracts and property documents. The registration of the case does not establish wrongdoing, and responsibility can be determined only through the investigative and judicial process.
