The Goa Police has registered an unnatural death case following the demise of veteran actor Nana Patekar at his residence in Goa on Thursday morning. The 75-year-old National Award winner passed away after suffering a suspected cardiac arrest, leading authorities to initiate standard proceedings under Section 194 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita. Officials stated that the formal inquiry was launched after hospital authorities notified law enforcement upon his arrival, confirming that no foul play or criminal conspiracy has been established so far.
Standard Legal Inquiries Underway Following Hospital Intimation
Police records indicate that the actor was transported from his Ocean Park residence in Dona Paula to Manipal Hospital in Bambolim, where he was declared dead on arrival at the emergency department. The probe is being headed by Police Sub-Inspector Nitin Naik. Authorities noted that registering an unnatural death case is routine legal protocol when a person dies at home and is brought dead to a medical facility, allowing officials to formally document the incident and rule out external interference.
According to Dr Shekhar Salkar, head of the Oncology Department at Manipal Hospital, the actor was brought to the facility between 4:20 am and 4:30 am. Despite resuscitation efforts by the medical team, Patekar had already passed away before reaching the hospital premises. The hospital subsequently notified the local police in accordance with mandatory medico-legal procedures. Officials emphasized that the ongoing inquiry serves to verify facts and does not signify suspicion of a crime.
Final Rites Conducted With Full State Honours in Pune
Patekar’s mortal remains were flown from Goa to Pune on Thursday evening, where his last rites were performed late at night with full state honours at his farmhouse in Donje village. A substantial crowd of admirers, along with notable figures from the film fraternity and political landscape, gathered at the venue to pay their final tributes.
Due to the late hour of the cremation, several film industry colleagues were unable to attend the ceremony. His son, Malhar Patekar, stated that while the family had hoped the mortal remains would arrive earlier, the transit from Goa to the village faced unexpected delays. Given that substantial time had elapsed since the tragedy occurred early in the morning, the family decided to conclude the final ceremonies without further postponement.
Family and Film Industry Remember Veteran Actor’s Legacy
Speaking after the funeral, Malhar Patekar stated that his father’s achievements would keep his memory immortal, noting that the late actor dedicated his life to uniting people and guiding them along a righteous path. He added that the family remains committed to upholding the values and legacy left behind. Patekar is survived by his wife, Neelkanthi Patekar, and his son.
The acclaimed artist built a distinguished career spanning several decades, earning wide recognition across Indian cinema for his versatile portrayals. Fans and film colleagues across the country expressed grief following his passing. Meanwhile, the Goa Police investigation remains open to complete mandatory legal formalities, with officials maintaining that no evidence of suspicious activity has surfaced during the preliminary inquiry.
