New Delhi. The Indian government has issued a strong warning to citizens over attempts to join Russia’s armed forces amid the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has advised Indians to strictly avoid travelling to Russia for the purpose of joining its armed forces, stressing that entering a war zone is an extremely risky step that could pose a direct and serious threat to their lives.
In its advisory, the MEA said joining the Russian military is a “very dangerous path” and strongly discouraged Indian citizens from taking such a step. The warning comes as the Russia-Ukraine conflict continues, with military operations and attacks creating significant security risks in several areas.

Concern over plans to give up Indian citizenship
The MEA also said it had come across information indicating that some Indian citizens appeared willing to give up their Indian citizenship in order to join the Russian armed forces. The government has urged such individuals to fully understand the seriousness of such decisions and the legal and personal consequences that could follow.
According to the ministry, decisions involving military service in a foreign country can have significant legal and personal implications. The risks become particularly severe when such service involves deployment in an active war zone, where circumstances can change rapidly and exposure to combat-related dangers remains high.
Direct threat to life in war zones
The MEA has warned Indian citizens that participating in military activities in a war zone carries serious and potentially fatal risks. The Russia-Ukraine conflict has involved missile and drone attacks as well as ground combat in different areas. Travelling to a conflict-affected region for military service, therefore, carries risks far beyond those associated with ordinary overseas employment or travel.
The government has urged citizens to carefully assess the risks and potential legal consequences before considering any offer involving military service in Russia. It has specifically cautioned people against offers made by agents or other individuals promising employment, higher salaries or other financial benefits in exchange for travelling to Russia.
Appeal to stay away from agents and inducements
The MEA has appealed to Indian citizens not to be lured by agents or promises of financial benefits into travelling to Russia or any other conflict-affected area for military service. The advisory is aimed at preventing people from being exposed to potential fraud, coercion and the dangers associated with active military operations.
The ministry has also urged citizens to put their safety first and avoid travelling abroad on the basis of recruitment offers without verifying their authenticity and understanding their legal implications. People considering military-related employment have been advised to exercise particular caution before accepting such offers.
The alleged recruitment of Indian citizens into the Russian armed forces has previously emerged as an issue in discussions between India and Russia. The Indian government has raised the matter of the release and repatriation of Indian nationals involved in such cases.
The latest advisory again puts the focus on preventing Indian citizens from reaching war zones through recruitment agents, employment promises or financial inducements. The government’s warning makes clear that travelling to Russia for military service amid the ongoing conflict can expose individuals to severe dangers.
Indian citizens have been advised to consider not only the immediate financial or employment benefits being offered to them but also the potential risks to their safety, legal status and future before making any decision related to military recruitment in a conflict zone.
